He lives in Trempealeau, Wisconsin, where he roams the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, and Perrot State Park. Nature photography and writing is done full-time. Birds, mammals, turtles, snakes, frogs, insects, and landscapes are primary photo subjects along the Mississippi River and its adjacent marshes, ponds, forests, and rocky bluffs. Photo credits include National Wildlife, National Geographic, Natural History, Wildlife Conservation, Sierra, Defenders, Ranger Rick, Audubon, and other magazines, books, and calendars. Allen Black Sheldon’s first exclusive calendar is Mississippi River Wildlife, a wall calendar for 2011. The value will go to support Myrick Hixon EcoPark. | Astronomy Club Public Viewing | Saturdays: September 18th The La Crosse Area Astronomical Society will be offering public observing sessions (Star Parties) over the summer. Meet us at the observing site in Hixon Forest on the Prairie Trail Loop near the weather station located on County Rd FA. Club members will have scopes setup to show you the stars, moon, planets and galaxies. These programs will be held the 3rd Saturday of each month. The dates are: June 19th, July 17th, August 21, and September 18th. Observing begins just after sunset and of course will be weather dependent. | Prairie Smoke Concert Benefitting the EcoCenter November 13th Where: Myrick Hixon EcoPark When: Saturday, November 13th at 7:30pm Cost: $10.00 per ticket (Buy at the EcoCenter) The music of Prairie Smoke is like bacon sizzling on the stove. Prairie Smoke’s home-cooking is done by a five-member band that, among them, plays penny whistle, flute, fiddle, mandolin, mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, banjo, guitar and upright bass. They serve up great renditions of everything from Irish jigs, reels, and airs, to original songs that stem from their roots in the Coulee Region. Prairie Smoke is a band whose character truly emerges in live performances. Because they love the music they play, and respect each other’s musicianship, the band’s positive energy is obvious and contagious. Whether performing in a concert hall like the Pump House, or the intimacy of a children’s concert or house concert, Prairie Smoke’s ability to entertain and inspire remains constant.
