Raptor Day

Saturday, Mar 13 - 10am to 2pm

Join MHEP in celebrating the opening of the peregrine falcon exhibit sponsored by Dairyland Power.  Meet a live peregrine falcon and other raptors!

10 am - Opening ceremony - Dairyland Power  

10:15am - Bob Anderson and live peregrine falcons  

11:30 - Break, snacks, artist reception, look around, mingling etc.  

12:30pm - Coulee Region Rehab and live hawk and owl

March Artist of the Month

Lee Harwell, a local Nature Photographer, will be MHEP's first Artist of the Month!  His artwork will be shown in the gift shop the entire month of March so please stop by and see his work.  Maybe you'll find something to buy!

We will be holding a Meet the Artist Reception on Saturday, March 13th.  The time is 11:30-1pm.

Each month, a new artist will be featured in Myrick Hixon EcoPark’s gift shop. The EcoPark is now accepting exhibition proposals. This is a great opportunity for artists and artisans to have their work on display! Panelists will choose from submissions that share the vision and mission of the EcoPark. Prescribed Burn School

Saturday, Mar 20th & Sunday, Mar 21st or Saturday, Apr 17th & Sunday, April 18th (8:30-4:30 pm)

This two-day course will cover the ecology of fire, fire behavior principles, and hte elements of fire management planning, all particularly focused on prairie and savanna ecosystems.  Participants will operate basic fire management tools, view the layout and preparation of a fire unit, and, weather permitting, conduct several real burns.  This course will not prepare students to serve as a burn boss or conduct burns on their own.

It will allow graduates to participate as a volunteer in prescribed burns in the La Crosse Area.  Space is limited to 25 participants per session.  Please call 784-0303 to pre-register by March 5th for the March session and by April 2nd for the April session.

Fee = $30 for MHEP Members, $35 for Nonmembers, $20 for Students

Wonderful Woodcocks

Have you ever seen a sky dance?  Do you know what bird does that?  Come discover the woodcock, its sky dance and many other adaptations!  Join Naturalist Anna DeMers as she explains all about these great birds.  After a short presentation we will hike outside looking for woodcocks and other wonders of nature.  FREE!

Felted Soap Workshop

Saturday, April 10, Noon-3pm

Come learn how to felt soap at this fun workshop.  This olive soap is gentle and smells delicious.  Great for gardeners, campers - anyone who gets grubby.  Kids love it!  It adds a bit of creativity to your bathroom, is long lasting and making it is just plain fun!

Frog Frenzy Freakout

Thursday, Apr 21 from 6:30-9pm

Find out why frogs are frenzied and call as we walk along the trails by the L aCrosse River Marsh on a spring evening during Earth Week.  We may even spot and hear other interesting marsh critters.  And if you like what you hear why not help with an evening frog call survey.  Volunteer with a friend or family member to help one evening a week or one evening every 2 weeks, whatever works for you.  It's a great way to enjoy the wonders of nature as dusk turns to evening from April until August.  Call Stephanie at 784-0303 Ext 223 to sign up and/or for more information or email .

October 2010 - Ann Peterson, owner of Gallery La Crosse & a long-time EcoPark Volunteer, will be holding the 3rd Annual Art Show Benefit and reception for the EcoPark - "Our La Crosse; Prairie, Marsh & Forest"

This is a Benefit Show to help fund local Environmental Education at Myrick Hixon EcoPark, with several avenues of support:

  • 25% of the Selling price of works sold will be donated
  • 100% of the People's Choice votes will be donated ($1/vote)
  • 75% of the Entry Fees will be donated (25% will be awarded to artists)
  • 10% of the value of all Gift Certificates Sold during show dates will be donated
  • Use of the Featured Artist space at Gallery La Crosse will be donated

The Reception will be held October 21st, 2010 at Gallery La Crosse (320 Main St in La Crosse).  Free snacks and beverages!  Call Ann Peterson at Gallery La Crosse 608-782-4278 or email with any questions!

27th Annual Banquet

November 2010 - Watch for details!

2009 was our first year holding the Annual Banquet at the new EcoCenter building.  We had over 112 people attend!  The atmosphere and food was fantastic and could not have been pulled off without the expertise of Nell at Nell's City Grill.  She created beautiful centerpieces and her staff was absolutely fabulous!  Also, thank you to Noelke Distributing for providing the beverages.

Drake Hokanson & Carol Kratz gave a riveting presentation; "Beyond the Confines of This World:  A Brief Journey to Antartica".  We also recognized all the time and good work that Thompson Animal Medical Center has provided to Myrick Hixon EcoPark over the years!  Carol Ramsey was the recipient of the Pat Caffrey Award for exception volunteer service!

2009 was also the first year we held a 'Green' Silent Auction which was the biggest auction yet.  We brought in over $2,400 this year.  A special thank you to Jennifer Odom for all her hard work to bring in so many wonderful auction items, and thank you to the following businesses who donated:

21st Annual Volunteer Party

 The 2009 Volunteer Recognition Night was a fabulous success thanks to Rita Koch-Tometz, All Star Lanes, Coney Island, Maggies Restaurant,  Seven Bridges Restaurant, Ship Shape Car Wash, Sweet-Shop, TGI Fridays, Traditions Restaurant, WKBT, Gallery La Crosse & John Zoerb who donated the many fantastic door prizes.

We had over 60 volunteers attend and enjoy food made by EcoPark Staff and festive drinks!  Thank you to Pepsi of La Crosse for donating the non-alcoholic beverages! Check out our facebook page for pictures!
